for Master of Fine Arts Degree
Dear
MFA program applicant,
Thank
you for your interest in the studio graduate program at Tulane
University. Through the School of Liberal Arts, the Newcomb
Art Department offers the MFA degree in a relatively small,
intensive, two-year residency program that emphasizes close
interaction with faculty and peers. Degree requirements focus
on studio work but include four MFA seminar classes and two
graduate level courses in the history of art. Students are
provided with a private studio and 24-hour access to general
facilities.
The
Woldenberg Art Center offers some of the finest facilities
available. Sculpture houses an extensive metal foundry and
wood shop. Ceramics includes general studio workrooms as well
as clay and glaze mixing rooms and kiln room. Glass houses
both a hot and cold shop. Printmaking has facilities for intaglio,
lithography and silkscreen as well as its own darkroom. Photography
includes graduate and main darkrooms, a developing room, print
mounting room, lighting studio, lecture and demo room and
a digital imaging room. Painting and drawing maintains four
rooms with full walls of natural north light and color-balanced
lighting. The 1,600 sq. ft. Carroll Gallery in the Newcomb
Art Wing is dedicated to student and faculty exhibitions,
providing opportunities for showing new student work in addition
to regular thesis exhibitions. The new 3,500-sq. ft. Newcomb
Art Gallery features temporary exhibitions of contemporary
and historic visual art on a year-round basis.
