LibraryThing!

Clay, always a step ahead, has just reminded me of a site I visited once and never really examined closely. LibraryThing is absolutely fantastic!

This is what Clay had to say about LibraryThing.

I've already begun to catalog my vast biblio holdings. The pace will really pickup when my hand held barcode scanner arrives. LibraryThing very cleverly cross-coordinates the book's ISBN code with the Library of Congress and Amazon.com to fill in all your information, even a pic of the cover. There's actually an interesting story behind the scanner LibraryThing offers. Once again, courtesy of Clay, the scanner story. It's worth a read.

And in case you're curious: Derek's Library (a work in progress)

What's the significance here? Sure it's fun and could come in very handy if I loose all or part of my collection, again - rising water is an ever present hazard in New Orleans. The real significance, for me, is that this is the first social networking site I've investigated that really speaks to me. Purusing other users' collections, comparing works, reading comments and reviews... this time I'm interested.

Check back in a few more weeks. I plan to do a lot more adding...

Cool, Derek. Glad to see you joined up. One thing I didn't see when I first started adding books was that the free account is good for only 200 books. I hit that in only about 2 hours of indexing. But $25 lifetime membership was too good to pass up. I, too, am excited about the book discussion and recommendations the site will give. And as you point ou, the great mechanism for catalogin a collection for disaster recovery, something all of us in New Orleans wish we knew a lot less about. I finished cataloging my fiction and am about really get going with my philosophy collection. Then I expect to spend several weeks tagging my collection.

I hit the 200 entry limit pretty quick, too. Well worth the $25 one time fee, though.

I'm already up to 300+ volumes and my scanner hasn't even arrived, yet. Typing in the ISBN code isn't a tedious as I feared.

Oh wonderful, here is another time sink! I was up till 2:00 AM adding books and I am still not finished. (Cries in my diet soda) I think I like this better than Delicious.

Thanks Derek!
