eKaqchikel 2007 - A Little Off the Tapa
eKaqchikel Project Site | Marie“s eKaqchikel Flickr feed | Derek's Flickr Feed for today
Great news! Marie's recovery is nearly complete. She showed up for breakfast this morning feeling almost human. Quite a difference from yesterday. I attribute it to the restorative power of the soda cracker...
Today was mostly an off-day. After a full week of non-stop production, we allowed ourselves to sleep in and then enjoy a leisurely breakfast. Around 11am we caught a tuk-tuk and struck out for the market. Part of the project calls for still photos of people engaged in specific occupations - teacher, bricklayer, farmer, etc. We figured we could find a lot of these people in and around the market, and indeed we did.
The market itself is full of vendors, so it was more a matter of finding the right scenario. Our friend in the pet shop may have just the right look. We also found a very nice doctor willing to stand for us, as well as a carpenter who sanded and started up his saw at our request.
We also needed a barber, so I took a hit for the team. Not the worst cut I've ever had, but now I have to explain to Buddy on Oak St. why I'm going to miss my monthly shearing...
Later, we got in some quality hammock time while the rain came down. I'm going to have to go with my friend Jared on one point - hammocks look a lot more comfortable than they actually are!
Finally had the chance to stitch together some more of the panoramas I've been taking. Some really amazing vistas!
We've been kicked out of the hotel bar and restaurant by a Guatemalan / Norwegian wedding. Quite the conflation of cultures. The clash of customs alone is amazing. Would love to take pix, but don't think it would be appreciated!

It looks like it was a great day today. You guys are doing an amazing job - I miss you guys already!
