Since 2004 a team from Tulane University has been traveling each year to Guatemala to produce content for a multi-media language application. Next week begins the fifth and final Guatemala road trip collaboration between the Stone Center for Latin American Studies and Tulane Technology Services. The final product of this multi-year effort is a self-paced, online and CD-ROM, Flash-based language learning application. The goal: use innovative new media technologies to teach the Maya kaqchikel language to English and Spanish speakers.

Last month I attended the New Media Consortium annual conference in Monterey, California, and brought along an entry for the poster competition. I'm a new media sort of fellow, but sometimes paper and ink (even laser printer ink) is the way to go.

I'm happy to report that my entry, "The Four Corners of Classroom Support: A Multi-Part Approach to Classroom Technology at Tulane" won a Judges' Choice award. It looked darn nice, too!

Another great New Media Consortium summer conference has come and gone. This one was hosted by Princeton University and was attended by more than 500 new media and education technology professionals from around the country. Nearly 90 sessions were offered during the four days and Gina, Marie and I took in as many as we could. An abundance of "link-ful" goodness after the jump...

Back in October David Robinson and I finally had the chance to currate a new media art exhibition at the Carroll Gallery. The show - "New Art, New Media, New Orleans" - featured works by local artists and was staged in conjunction with the regional conference of the New Media Consortium.

NMC 2007 - Wrap-up

Now that the dust has settled and the NMC 2007 summer conference is one for the history books, thought I'd do a little link wrap-up.

Many of the presenters submitted their presentations for online posting, and some sessions were even recorded for podcast. The full list of available presentations is on the NMC site: NMC Summer Conference Presentations. Check them out - they've included the poster sessions, too, several of which were facinating!

Stitch Away!

Tulane test panorama-3

Followed a link from Alan Levine's excellent new media blog (CogDogBlog) and found Autostitch. It's an amazing 2D automatic image stitching utility - 2D as in vertical and horizontal panoramas - and comes out of the AI lab at the University of British Columbia. It produces a seamless panorama from even the most casually captured images. It even manages to smooth out the shifting presence of moving people, cars, etc.

NMC 2007 - Edward Castronova and the Fantasy Regnant

Keynote - Edward Castronova Keynote - Edward Castronova

As promised, here is Ted Castronova's keynote address from the NMC conference: Edward Castronova: Fantasy Regnant

The "take-away" is this: This century is going to be one dominated by creations of fantasy authors. Ted's not necessarily even speaking about a domination of media or even culture, but rather of our work, our politics and even our daily lives.

It's audio only, but well worth a listen. (I'm looking for his slide presentation online - I'll link it if it turns up).

NMC 2007 - The Ideal Stream

The final session I attended during the Attended 2007 NMC Conference was presented by a group from the host institution. Edgar Huang and Clifford Marsiglio of the School of Informatics at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) and their team have been conducting a methodical survey of available streaming technologies and their capabilities. The extensive results haven't been published yet, but the conclusions they shared are, in some cases, surprising.

Phillip Long over at MIT has a lot to say about institutions preparing to enter Second Life. The school's initial foray into that virtual world was part of an attempt to get freshmen into the right dorms. At MIT, you don't pick your final residence hall until you've been on campus for three weeks. Makes for a better long term match if you can see the place and get to know the character of the residents before you commit to the place for the entire year.
