Last month I attended the New Media Consortium annual conference in Monterey, California, and brought along an entry for the poster competition. I'm a new media sort of fellow, but sometimes paper and ink (even laser printer ink) is the way to go.

I'm happy to report that my entry, "The Four Corners of Classroom Support: A Multi-Part Approach to Classroom Technology at Tulane" won a Judges' Choice award. It looked darn nice, too!

Twitter - Staying Relevant with 140 Characters

IMG_2124IMG_2128IMG_2132IMG_2148IMG_2137

Twitter's been around since 2006 and in the public eye since 2007, but recently it's exploded into the consciousness of the general population. I think we can all agree that when a social technology makes it into the heads of Congress, it's no longer "the-latest-thing." But now that Twitter's hit the mainstream, the social network possibilities have multiplied.

Another great New Media Consortium summer conference has come and gone. This one was hosted by Princeton University and was attended by more than 500 new media and education technology professionals from around the country. Nearly 90 sessions were offered during the four days and Gina, Marie and I took in as many as we could. An abundance of "link-ful" goodness after the jump...

Back in October David Robinson and I finally had the chance to currate a new media art exhibition at the Carroll Gallery. The show - "New Art, New Media, New Orleans" - featured works by local artists and was staged in conjunction with the regional conference of the New Media Consortium.

The Obligatory iPhone Post

IMG_0361IMG_0320IMG_0318IMG_0322

I'm going to channel Navin Johnson for a moment... "The new iPhone's here! The new iPhone's here!"

No, really. The iPhones are here. What? I'm a week late, you say? Maybe. But I finally laid my hands on one of these beauties yesterday and, honestly, it is all it's cracked up to be. Not perfect, to be sure, but the interface – the breakthrough element of this product – is outstanding. You only need to handle an iPhone for a short while before you realize that you're dealing with The Next Big Thing™.

NMC 2007 - Wrap-up

Now that the dust has settled and the NMC 2007 summer conference is one for the history books, thought I'd do a little link wrap-up.

Many of the presenters submitted their presentations for online posting, and some sessions were even recorded for podcast. The full list of available presentations is on the NMC site: NMC Summer Conference Presentations. Check them out - they've included the poster sessions, too, several of which were facinating!

NMC 2007 - Edward Castronova and the Fantasy Regnant

Keynote - Edward Castronova Keynote - Edward Castronova

As promised, here is Ted Castronova's keynote address from the NMC conference: Edward Castronova: Fantasy Regnant

The "take-away" is this: This century is going to be one dominated by creations of fantasy authors. Ted's not necessarily even speaking about a domination of media or even culture, but rather of our work, our politics and even our daily lives.

It's audio only, but well worth a listen. (I'm looking for his slide presentation online - I'll link it if it turns up).
