Twitter's been around since 2006 and in the public eye since 2007, but recently it's exploded into the consciousness of the general population. I think we can all agree that when a social technology makes it into the heads of Congress, it's no longer "the-latest-thing." But now that Twitter's hit the mainstream, the social network possibilities have multiplied.

Another great New Media Consortium summer conference has come and gone. This one was hosted by Princeton University and was attended by more than 500 new media and education technology professionals from around the country. Nearly 90 sessions were offered during the four days and Gina, Marie and I took in as many as we could. An abundance of "link-ful" goodness after the jump...

Now that the dust has settled and the NMC 2007 summer conference is one for the history books, thought I'd do a little link wrap-up.
Many of the presenters submitted their presentations for online posting, and some sessions were even recorded for podcast. As promised, here is Ted Castronova's keynote address from the NMC conference: Edward Castronova: Fantasy Regnant
The "take-away" is this: This century is going to be one dominated by creations of fantasy authors. Ted's not necessarily even speaking about a domination of media or even culture, but rather of our work, our politics and even our daily lives.
It's audio only, but well worth a listen. (I'm looking for his slide presentation online - I'll link it if it turns up).
Phillip Long over at MIT has a lot to say about institutions preparing to enter Second Life. The school's initial foray into that virtual world was part of an attempt to get freshmen into the right dorms. At MIT, you don't pick your final residence hall until you've been on campus for three weeks. Makes for a better long term match if you can see the place and get to know the character of the residents before you commit to the place for the entire year.
Attended Victor Edmonds afternoon presentation on coursecasting and the state of the art. Victor runs the Educational Technology Services (ETS) at Berkeley, a dynamic organization and a real leader, for many years now, in the realm of on-line media production and delivery.
Great sessions today, so far, including an absolutely riveting Keynote presentation from Edward Castronova of Indiana University. Ed's background is in economics and, in fact, he studies the economies of on-line virtual communities. But that's just the start.
As Ed says about these 3D immersive communities "That new world is more than 3D; more than immersive; more than online; more than entertainment; more than communication. It is all of those things, and one more, a new source of Meaning."
Have arrived in Indianapolis with Marie for the 2007 New Media Consortium annual summer conference. There's a definite Web 2.0 flavor to the NMC's activities these days, especially with regards to the conference.
