Overview
Lusher
Charter School’s curriculum is a rigorous academic program using
the arts as its integrating theme. The program includes math, language,
science, social studies, and foreign language. The school curriculum
is shaped according to national, state, and local standards. Teachers
use research-based strategies in their instruction, incorporating
differentiated instruction, backwards design, inquiry-based, and developmentally
appropriate practices, all of which are key elements in the effective
teaching of reading and key contributing factors in effective numeracy
programs. The curriculum provides a challenging learning environment
that is created and characterized by high expectations for all students,
where the focus is on student engagement, critical thinking, and empowerment.
Learning requires the active participation of the student with experimentation
and the use of manipulatives, i.e. tangible materials and supplies
used to facilitate the learning of abstract ideas. Literacy is taught
across the curriculum, and all teachers are considered teachers of
reading. Students are involved in many projects in math and science
that entail the use of the scientific method and learn to tie these
experiences to prior knowledge. Technology is also integrated throughout
the curriculum. Teachers are trained in the neurological development
of learners and, therefore, have the ability and the tools needed
to address learning differences among students.
