The
Creative Writing program is designed to establish a supportive community
of writers and to foster the artistic and intellectual growth of each
writer in that community. Creative writing is a highly academic arts
discipline, requiring strong critical and imaginative skills as well
as a mastery of writing techniques. Thus, the curriculum emphasizes
both reading and writing, with expectations becoming progressively
more challenging within each level of study and from one level to
the next.
In
most years, we will study and write poetry in the first and fourth
quarters, and short fiction and non-fiction in the second and third
quarters; we will work in other genres (e.g., dramatic writing, screenwriting)
when possible and appropriate. Novels and other book-length works
will be studied throughout the year, usually about three per quarter.
By the end of each year, students will have developed their imaginative,
technical and critical abilities through studying and writing poems
and short fiction; developed their critical skills and aesthetic appreciation
through studying a wide range of novels; learned both to provide and
receive constructive feedback on creative work in writing workshops;
broadened their critical skills through film studies; revised work
for quarterly portfolios; and given a public reading of their work.
Upper level students will also edit, design and produce a professional-quality
literary magazine composed of work submitted by creative writing students.
