Philosophy
Through
Lusher Charter School’s mission, the dance department seeks
to give students the best arts-integrated education possible. The
faculty works collaboratively with its individual members, other arts’
faculty, and the whole academic faculty to offer a broad but thorough,
challenging, creative and rigorous training to prepare students for
university dance programs or any of a number of professional paths
that a young dancer might encounter.
Curriculum
Students
train in Ballet and Modern and Jazz techniques, explore Improvisation
and Choreography, take several History classes, personal and professional
development classes. There will also be many opportunities to collaborate
with classmates and teachers across the curriculum. Each semester
the students will take several level appropriate classes. The levels
develop in rigor and student responsibility, but with each level the
basic template and dance faculty involvement remain the same. Each
term the student will have Modern and Ballet technique classes, “creative”
classes (Improvisation, Choreography, Performance), and development
classes (History, Fitness, Aesthetics, Music for Dance, Dancer’s
Life). In addition there are additional Carnegie classes offered in
the afternoon via both the Lusher Dance Ensemble and the Lusher Dance
Company.
Ensemble
& Company and Pre-Professional Expectations
The
Ensemble is a training and performing group open to any student at
Lusher. All dance students are strongly encouraged to participate
in as many Ensemble classes and choreographic pieces as they can.
The Company is an invitation only performance opportunity for the
most advanced students. Students are invited into the Company and
are auditioned for faculty pieces.
Students are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that demonstrates
their commitment to a career in dance and commitment to taking care
of themselves as dancers and people. The Lusher dance program is fair
but very rigorous acknowledging the highly competitive and varied.
We are confident that if a student applies her or himself fully in
the program, they will be exceptionally prepared for their next steps
in dance.
