Theater
Dramatic
Literature and History
This
course examines the origins and development of Drama from ancient
times to present day. During a three-year course of study, students
read, discuss and explore through dramatic activity, the historical
background and theatrical style of some of the world’s major
playwrights. Level one will examine the origins of dramatic ritual,
classical Greek, Roman as well as Medieval theatre. Level two will
pursue an in depth study of theatre literature and history from the
Renaissance era to the 1800’s. The third year is devoted to
playwrights and historical movements of the modern era.
Movement
This
discipline focuses on clarity of movement, flexibility, physical control
and endurance. This course will examine disciplines such as martial
arts, stage combat, yoga, pantomime, clown arts and mask work.

Voice
Students
will discover and utilize the breathing techniques and articulation
exercises necessary to produce a strong, articulate stage voice. They
will explore the connection between the actor’s body and the text.
They will learn to examine the language structure of the script to facilitate
unleashing of the emotions through the voice.
Improvisation
Based
on theatre games from Improvisation for the Theatre, written by Viola
Spolin, this class enables the student to develop the ability to respond
instantly to different situations on stage. Student will cultivate
a facility to recognize the Who, What and Where of a scene and then
react immediately to the situation.
Stagecraft
for Actors
Students
learn the mechanical skills such as carpentry, prop building, sound
and lighting that are the necessary to create scenic properties for
stage productions.
