Charter School students participating in the CA Visual Arts Program
will engage and participate in a rigorous in-depth study of the visual
arts through the development of individual expression, technical proficiency,
aesthetic perception, critical thinking, and communication skills.
Their education will benefit by integrating arts with academics and
collaborating with other arts disciplines. This balanced, integrated
approach to the arts provides enhanced opportunities for discovery
and personal growth. From the individual students’ diverse backgrounds,
qualities and concerns, they too will contribute to the study and
production of art.
Through instruction by professional artists-teachers and visiting
artists, students will be exposed to a variety of media and processes.
Throughout the program they will develop technical skills while working
from direct observation. The challenges they encounter will provide
a framework for creative solutions. Informed by their exploration
and discoveries, students will eventually choose one or more areas
of focus ultimately working within a personalized conceptual or thematic
scope.

Students
will be given a broad foundation in art history, cultural diversity
and contemporary practice, contextualizing their own sense of place
in the art world. Encouraging critical thinking and analysis during
studio discussions and critiques, will enable students to communicate
their ideas about art in a meaningful way.
The program culminates with a body of work that demonstrates personal
vision, strong concept development, and proficient craftsmanship.
As young artists, students will contribute to a contemporary art dialogue
that acknowledges cultural perspectives and global influences. Empowered
with these qualities, students will be prepared for further studies
and a more promising future in the visual arts.
