Arts
at the Willow Campus
At
the K-5th grade Willow Campus, every
student has the opportunity for multiple engagements with the arts.
At the heart of the program is Lusher’s Arts Integration program.
Through this program, every classroom teacher is paired with an artist-teacher.
The two faculty members plan together to incorporate instruction in
an art form to support and enhance the broader curriculum. Teachers
at both campuses are trained through the Southeast Center for Education
and the Arts at UT-Chattanooga in how to meaningfully integrate the
arts into the broader curriculum to further student achievement.
Students at the elementary school also engage directly in the performing
and creative arts. Professional artists work with students as they
rotate through 9-week programs to explore dance, theatre, music, and
visual arts. Every K-5 student also receives instruction in violin
each day. This offers students a foundation in music and helps to
develop important skills in self-discipline, teamwork, and creativity.
These programs are in addition to state-mandated Talented in the Arts
services for students designated as such in music, theatre and visual
arts.
Outside
of the regular school day, students at Lusher’s Willow Campus
can take after school classes in the Arts After Hours program.
In addition to specialized arts classes, students may audition for
Lusher Dance Troupe and Lusher Drama Troupe. These groups perform
original works created by students in formal theatre settings and
in various schools throughout the area.
Each spring, the year-long study of the arts at Willow culminates
in the Arts Celebration. Every class participates through public performances
and the school is festooned with student artwork inside and out. At
Lusher Charter School, the arts are indeed celebrated as a way of
building community with fun and creativity.
