The
arts play a central role in the life of Lusher Charter School. With
a full staff of practicing, professional artists, Lusher Charter School
has the well-deserved reputation of being one of the top arts institutions
in the city. In the broadest sense, students engage in the arts in
two main ways—integrated arts education and the Certificate
of Artistry (CA) program.
Through
integrated arts education, the arts are infused into Lusher’s
broader curriculum as a mode of learning and deepening understanding.
For example, students may use dance to explore the relationship of
planetary bodies in space or study modern art in order to better understand
and appreciate modern poetry. Integrating the arts into all classrooms
allows for a level of subject-matter engagement and critical thinking
not often found in schools where the arts play a sideline role.
Lusher
offers Arts Exploratory classes and Arts
After Hours in elementary, middle and high school,
and students can focus their study during high school in one of five
arts disciplines offered through a specialized, rigorous Certificate
of Artistry program. Students work through a curriculum of history,
theory, criticism and practice in their chosen arts discipline—Creative
Writing, Dance, Media Arts,
Theater, Musical Theater,
Stagecraft, Vocal & Instrmental
Music and Visual Arts—during
and after school hours. Lusher performance groups have been on stage
throughout New Orleans and from Baton Rouge to The Kennedy Center
in Washington, D.C.
