Athletics
are an integral part of the Lusher Charter School experience. With
the school’s fundamental belief that students who are engaged
with school life in a variety of ways tend to perform better in all
facets of their education, athletics provides a fantastic way to become
involved in life at Lusher. Beyond the values of participation in
sports, Lusher prides itself on a history of fielding winning teams
of some of the top athletes in the area. For over a decade, Lusher
has participated at the middle school level in Metro Middle School
Athletic Association competition as one of the only public schools
in the organization. In fact, Lusher is one of the founding members
of this athletic association. During that time, Lusher has won dozens
of city championships and counting. Over one-half of Lusher students
participate in athletics at Lusher, and the program is growing with
the high school.

Lusher Charter School is officially joined the Louisiana
High School Athletic Association (LHSAA) in January 2007. This
allows the school to compete in region and state-sanctioned competitions
and provide a level of credibility to the new high school athletic
program. Fall 2006 saw the beginning of Lusher’s swimming program,
featuring several state-ranked swimmers. The team practices at Tulane
University’s Reilly Center. Additionally, Lusher High School
students compete in the full-range of high school sports, with contact
football added in fall 2007.
The Lusher Charter School coaching staff, under the direction of Athletic
Director Louis Landrum, is one of the finest around. With a combination
of veteran experience and youthful energy, Lusher coaches form strong
bonds with their student-athletes, becoming great mentors and support
staff for life beyond competition. Additionally, the Lusher coaching
staff is assisted by some of the top NCAA student-athletes from Tulane
University. All of this combines to form a vibrant and competitive
athletic program that represents the school with pride on-campus and
off.
A
centerpiece of the athletic program at the Fortier campus is the newly-refurbished
Atlantik-Bruecke Community
Resource Center (ABCRC) gymnasium.
