The
purpose of college counseling at Lusher Charter School is to provide
a personalized, student-centered program that informs and supports
the high school wide community of students and parents. The college
counseling staff helps students discover college or university communities
that will best serve their academic and personal goals. Matching students
to appropriate schools is the ultimate goal of the college counseling
office.
College
counseling at Lusher is a four-year program to educate parents and
students extensively about preparing for college, completing college
applications, and selecting a college. Information is shared with
ninth and tenth graders through group presentations and information
sessions. The degree of counseling increases and becomes more specialized
as students advance from grades nine to twelve. The College Counseling
staff communicates with families through group meetings with parents
and students at all four grade levels, letters and emails, publications,
the school web site, the Lusher Letter, and most importantly,
individual counseling sessions. Parents are encouraged to take an
active role in the process and families are advised and informed about
recommended colleges, college essay preparation, standardized testing,
and scholarship and financial aid opportunities and procedures. During
second semester of sophomore year, small group meetings are held to
discuss PSAT results and planning for the second half of high school.
A College Kick Off program is held in January for the junior class.
Following the Kick Off, members of the junior class meet individually
and in small groups with the college counseling office to discuss
research strategies, summer opportunities, resume building, essay
writing, portfolios and auditions.
